Third Branding

Windy was the word for our third branding.

I took pictures up on a hillside to get away from the wind and dirt around the branding trap.

Cattle are gathered from the surrounding hills and trailed to the branding trap that is set up around a water source. After branding the cattle are trailed into another allotment. The summer range is over 65,000 acres. Cows like to hide their calves in the brush and junipers. Neighboring ranching families come and help out at branding time, and sort out any strays that might be theirs.

During lunch time the young kids pack up and go play together. There is a small creek in the sagebrush that they couldn't leave alone.

The boys and neighbor help-- telling jokes while waiting for a calf to throw.

Jeff's parents and our niece Betsy came for the day. Jim helped brand and Betsy helped do iodine.

Jasper castrating and Joseph ear marking.

Lunch was:
BBQ Beef sandwiches
Onion soup potatoes
Fresh fruit Salad
BLT salad
Ooey Gooey Caramel Cake
Everything was eaten with a little bit of dirt on top thanks to the wind.

Heading Home

Yum. Seriously, your menus sound as if they are straight out of "Taste of Home"!

I love that picture of all the kids in the sagebrush. It's like looking back in time to a different life. Suspenders and everything.....
