Potato harvest in the village. Each family in the village has a plot or a cooperative plot just outside the village where they grow some crops. The spuds are dug by hand, horses or they rent a tractor and have them dug. The cooperative farms are remnants of the Soviet collective farms.

Russians depend upon their gardens for food throughout the winter. Their history has taught them to have their own food stored during the cold, long winters.
